We woke up, and decided to check where the sunshine was, as it was still raining in Dunedin. After a quick search around, and a message to Danni (My older sister), we decided to head towards Wanaka, for the longest day driving yet, but still only 3.5hours.
On the way, we stopped near a hydro electric dam, which powers a fair portion of New Zealand, considering its size! and we only stopped there by chance, we were following signs for a picnic spot, so we were pleasantly surprised!
The main highways over here are very different to anything either of us has experienced before. They're one lane most of the time, with the occasional overtaking lane. It made it much easier than driving in the UK, and google maps was fond of sending us down the lesser roads, but that led to some beautiful driving. Despite some of the twisty roads we were driving down, we would still see lorries tackling them, something which impressed and scared us at the same time! The skill it must take to drive some of these roads is very impressive.
We decided to stop by a lakeside once the intermittent rain had stopped, and managed to snap some more photos!
After a few hours of driving, we eventually made it to Wanaka, or more specifically, Albert Town campground, a very basic campground that we stayed earlier this year whilst on holiday. There are toilets, and running water, but the water comes from the local river, so isn't safe for drinking. Thankfully, we had plenty of water with us, so this shouldn't be an issue.
Despite the short notice, Danni and Nick hosted us for a BBQ that night, and it was lovely to see them both and the kids again! They offered us to join them for pizza night the following night, which we of course accepted!
After a long days driving, and some lovely food, we headed back to the camp for the night to settle down and get a good nights sleep.
